Looking for the area's marquee football games this weekend? Head to Wise County.
Southwest Virginia's biggest high school game (J.I. Burton at Powell Valley) and the biggest college matchup (Georgetown, Ky. College vs. the University of Virginia's College at Wise) are both on tap this weekend in the county of Wise.
Tonight at Bullitt Park in Big Stone Gap, Burton (3-0) and Powell Valley (2-1) will meet in a matchup of two teams expected to go far in the Virginia High School League playoffs.
Meanwhile on Saturday at Carl Smith Stadium in Wise, UVa.-Wise meets Georgetown in a crucial Mid-South Conference clash.

September 16, 1949 "? J.T. Caruso's second-quarter touchdown propelled Norton past St. Paul, 6-0 ... Saltville earned a 13-7 win over Richlands ... Phil Honeycutt's 70-yard kickoff return highlighted Appalachia's 46-0 beatdown of Pound.

Behind two touchdowns from Bill Pullen, Tennessee High notched a 33-0 victory over Church Hill.

Tennessee High suffered a 10-7 loss to Baylor of Chattanooga thanks to a fourth quarter field goal. Butch Beverly scored Tennessee High' s lone TD, hauling in a 13-yard scoring strike from Larry Rose ... Lewis Moody and Charles Bolling accounted for touchdowns in Sullivan Central's 14-0 shutout of Lynn View ... Abingdon's Charlie Gregory, Buddy Mitchell, Leon Prater and Jimmy Clark scored touchdowns in a 27-0 blanking of Holston.
September 20, 1974 "? Carlos Lee rushed for 132 yards on 19 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead Virginia High past Patrick Henry 42-24. Russell Ervin led the way for PH, finishing the night with 133 rushing yards, 86 receiving yards and two touchdowns ... Dicky Bunn (11 carries, 197 yards, two touchdowns) led Sullivan Central to a 21-6 win over Sullivan ... David Lamie ran for a score and also threw a touchdown pass as Tennessee High outlasted John Battle 47-27. Gilmer Meade reached the end zone three times for Battle ... Eddie Robbins and Mark Sturgill had Wise's touchdowns in a 15-8 victory over Castlewood. Claude Turner had Castlewood's touchdown and also ran for the 2-point conversion ...
